Soap 101 - Beginning Cold Process Soapmaking

Soap Making 101 is a beginning-level soapmaking class designed to teach students to make soap by hand at home. The main focus of this class is the “cold process” soapmaking method. Although it may seem complicated when you are first starting out, making your own soap from scratch (the way some of our grandparents did) using all-natural ingredients can be both fun and rewarding ~ not to mention extremely addicting! If you’ve ever measured, mixed, and baked anything then you can make soap. We will cover what soap is, soap process, choosing fats and lye safety. Each student makes 1 lb of soap they get to take with them.

NOTE: This is an age 16+ class since making soap from scratch involves working with lye (aka sodium hydroxide). Also, cold process soap needs about a month to cure before using. To take part please wear or bring a long-sleeved shirt, closed-toed shoes. You’ll also need rubber gloves and safety goggles. Private sessions will have gloves and goggles provided for you.

“We loved your soap that we purchased at the local farmers market and when we heard about your class, we were super intrigued! The class was so inclusive and very fun! We didn’t expect to be able to take anything home, but it was awesome to have some finished product! We are so thankful to have taken the class. We hope to take another one just for a refresher! Thanks so much for all your advice and help!”

- Amanda and David Gianino, private class participants

“Jessica and Kevin taught a soap making class at The State Botanical Garden of Georgia. Needless to say, the class filled up in no time due to their reputation from our local farmers markets and gift shop at the Garden. They showed up with their teaching materials and supplies for the entire class with plenty of time to have the room set and prepared before the students arrived. This puts my mind to rest when an instructor is organized and not doing at last minute running around because it sets the mood for a calm and enjoyable learning experience for the students. The participants walk away with fantastic smelling soaps, how-to instructions, knowledge about the materials needed, memories and a huge smile. I loved hosting their class and being able to add their expertise to our community courses that we offer at The State Botanical Garden of Georgia. Look forward to March 2016!”

- Cora Keber, Education Coordinator, The State Botanical Garden of Georgia

“The Suds and Lather (now Normal Soap Company) workshop we organized for our UGA educational workshop at UGArden went perfectly! Jessica and Kevin are friendly and knowledgeable. They made sure everything ran smoothly. Even with a class size of 20 people, everyone got individualized instruction and was able to make their own soap molds to take home. The best part of the experience is how hands-on it is! You can customize your soap with the essential oils they supply the class.”

-Zachary Ennis, UGArden President, UGArden Soap-making workshop 2014

One apprentice made his own 6lb wood mold based on our handmade wood molds and we practiced how to line it.

Talking about trace!
Finished soap in the silicone mold the student brought with them.
